Visitors to Bruton School for Girls cannot fail to notice the many vibrant pieces of art on display throughout the school. Under the guidance of teachers who include artists Brian Wyatt and Terri Hogan, imaginative and experimental use of a wide range of materials and processes is encouraged. Girls of all ages and abilities produce an enormous variety of creative work to an extremely high standard. The school’s Open Studios exhibition shows the astonishing breadth and depth of talent of its young artists.
The Art Department is rooted in fine art, with opportunities to explore techniques in drawing and painting, textiles, printing, mixed media and sculpture, as well as traditional dark-room and digital photography. A well-equipped suite of studios includes a newly developed Sixth Form studio.
The talents of senior students have been showcased at local and regional exhibitions and festivals, to much public acclaim. In 2009, two Sixth Form students, Lizzie French and Sophie George, exhibited work at the Artists303 exhibition staged at the Royal Bath and West Showground, with Sophie being awarded a prize for the best work submitted by a student or graduate artist. Bruton students also joined forces with several local artists to arrange an exhibition of work to coincide with presentations related to the 2009 Somerset Art Weeks. Younger pupils in the Preparatory School have created exciting pieces in art workshops with local artist, Colin Bell.
Art at the school is popular at GCSE and A level and Art Scholarships are offered for students who demonstrate talent and potential. Many gifted and successful students have moved on from Bruton to study Art and allied subjects at university and a number of former students are currently working as textile and jewellery designers, architects, interior designers and teachers, as well as in publishing.
The school is delighted to welcome visitors to its Open Studios as part of Somerset Art Weeks in 2010 or indeed, by arrangement, at any other time. The school holds several Open Days throughout the year. For further information contact the school on 01749 814400 or visit the website at www.brutonschool.co.uk.
