My work is stoneware or porcelain and the pieces are mainly thrown and fired to 1260 degrees. There is a particularly rhythmic enjoyment involved in throwing but as the result can be quite restrictive I have tried to construct, what I hope are, amusing vessels, jugs and bottles by cutting, twisting and amalgamating thrown shapes. The forms that emerge grow from these shapes by trial and error. They may appear functional initially but are really only decorative and made just for fun. They are then glazed in bright colours that merge and interact as in aspects of landscapes. The qualities of the surfaces are varied with thick and thin areas of matt and shiny glazes.
There is also an element there of my relationship with clay and to what lengths that relationship can lead in terms of strength, fragility, power and sensitivity. Sometimes it seems to be a partnership and sometimes more a battle of wills! But I enjoy making them and I hope you will enjoy looking at them.
