JANE MOWAT

WOOD CARVER AND PRINTMAKER

Jane has been living in Somerset since 1990, and it is here that she has developed the work that she is known for.  The hills and woodlands of this county, the little hidden streams and moorlands, the glimpse of birds within foliage and the play of shadow and sunlight, and then the distant lure of the sea; these are the arena for the figures and creatures that inhabit her images.

She works instinctively, searching for the subject in each piece of wood.   The piece is given new life as it reveals creatures or a hand or water within the surface, and the knots or shape make sense of the forms that make up the carving or print.

The subjects that she explores often hint at the collective stories and subjects that make up our culture.  They suggest myths about journeys, or encounters with another, or the talking of beasts and birds.  Sometimes the need for rest, or dreaming, and the need for solitude, are part of the subject.  Who are we that inhabit this earth, and what are the truths that we need to rediscover in this present ‘modern’ age?

The artist has exhibited in many galleries in the West Country and in London, won awards, and has also been selected for National Competitions such as the National Print Exhibitions at the Mall Galleries, London, the Millfield Open, the Royal Academy Summer Shows in London and the Royal West of England Academy in Bristol.

Jane works from her studio at Hurstone, Waterrow, near Wiveliscombe, which is on the edge of Exmoor.  She occasionally gives classes here to beginners and experienced artists alike.  She will be exhibiting at her studio in September and October during Somerset Art Week Open Studios.  You are welcome to contact her about classes or to meet her at her studio during this event

(Please note : She will be at her studio 11-6 each Thursday to Sunday from 18th September to 3rd October.  All other times, please contact the artist first.)  on 01398 361454 or janemowat@eclipse.co.uk
