I started handbuilding in 1990 , mainly as a chance to explore forms that were anything but round. Having previously worked in stoneware, and feeling the need for change, I started working in red earthenware. Using a white slip and a clear glaze, also precipitated considerable experimentation with colour. I use a full range of techniques based around slab building to produce pieces, both sculptural and functional. I work from quick sketches or scribbles, sources and ideas often poached from traditional antique and architectural styles and presented in the form of characature. Mixed with themes such as Surrealism, illusion and false perspective, they come together, mainly in the form of clocks; often extravagant, always colourful and quirky and hopefully conveying a sense of fun.
